My Vegetable Garden

A post like this should ideally be accompanied by a tonne of 'Look how great they look' photographs of my plants and my produce...Unfortunately, I am too lazy to click and upload pictures for posterity....

I was always fond of gardening, but never got around to it seriously...In childhood gardening was limited to the occasional rose cuttings that I used to get from a great aunt's house...The high point of the 2 pot gardening experiment was when the rose plants somehow got entwined and I had 2 flowers of different colours in the same plant !

Roses were always a weakness, and another attempt was made post marriage to start a rose garden...I ended up having just 1 plant, which flowered exactly once and then wilted....

Recently, there has been a mass movement against pesticide infused vegetables in Kerala. The Horticorp started encouraging terrace gardening and offering grow bags with seeds/seedlings at a discounted price...

As usual I dreamt of my very own vegetable garden and promptly transferred the responsibility of making said dream into a reality to my dear hubby...This happened exactly a year back....Except the occasional nagging of 'Where are my grow bags?' I hardly did anything...

Couple of months back, hubby dear brought home the grow bags - and lo and behold, I had my very own vegetable garden ! The days I travel, my hubby waters the plants, the rest of the days I do...I have never followed a hobby so religiously in the last 25 years ! I got new seeds online, and even have a vision of where I want to take it in the next couple of years !

As of now, the success is quite moderate - we get a crop of Amaranthus once a week, and long beans once a week...there is the occasional ladies' finger and brinjal too...Tomatoes and Chillies have been a disaster - I just got 3 tomatoes and the plant refused to flower further...

I am planning to grow winter vegetables such as cauliflowers, brocolli, and carrots starting from seeds...I am not sure how successful it will be ...I also want to have a herb garden - with garlic, mint and coriander...

So far I have attempted to germinate bitter gourds, peas and brinjal. Only the brinjals have sprouted leaves till now. But I am still hopeful....Afterall, if the conditions are right, any seed will germinate !
